Snowdrop Day

bookscorpion: This is Chelifer cancroides, a book scorpion. Not a real scorpion, but an arachnid called a pseudoscorpion for obvious reasons. (Default)

I went to the cemetery today and it was the first warm day of spring - even the wind was warm, and all the birds were going absolutely nuts, they were so loud. The snowdrops are in full bloom everywhere and they look so incredibly lovely against the leaf litter.

Notes:

I've only just realized that the section breaks in recent chapters have not been showing up in Dreamwidth's html editor as they do in AO3's 😱 so I am working on going back and fixing that. (I'm not sure how far back that has been a problem.) I've been dealing with a lot of stress irl and I'm embarrassed not to have noticed there was a formatting issue! Apologies for any decreased readability. I'll try to keep a better eye out in the future.

If you're new here, please start with Chapter 1!

Final Fantasy XIV is owned by Square Enix. This is a non-commercial work of fanfiction.

Tonight I'm going out to the next iteration of the silent disco (80s/90s/2000s music — the cheesiest you can imagine), which as always is taking place in the cathedral. There's always a weird moment of disorientation when you enter the cavernous space of this ancient medieval cathedral ... and it's full of dancing people of all ages, dressed in lurid fluoro colours, stage lighting, and DJs.

So my prompt for this week's open thread is:

What examples of activities taking place in wildly incongruous spaces have you encountered?

At the southwest corner of Rivington Street and Essex in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, there is a pear-shaped building. Bartlett, with a squat, spherical foundation and tapered top. Narrow cylindrical stem, maybe two feet long. The whole thing is made entirely of frosted green glass that neither absorbs nor reflects much light, despite the cloudless, mid-morning sunshine on what feels like the first day of spring. The building’s front face is cross-section flat, but looking at the structure from any other angle reveals what appears to be an edifice infinitely extending back toward the horizon. There is a line of people snaking out the door and around, waiting for their chance to enter.

Standing across the street, you notice no one who goes inside appears to leave.

You believe yourself asleep but cannot be sure.

► Yesterday was my birthday! I have a soft spot for Thursdays, despite its location within the standard work week—enough so that I actually briefly considered going with “thursday” as a username before settling on “straightforwardly” /lore drop—so it always feels weirdly fitting when my birthday lands on a Thursday. Anyways—I had a pretty great day. Lots of good food, plenty of fun special drinks, good weather, and wandering around my favorite town to visit for a day trip.

Then I went to my mom’s place for cake and tea and presents, and we ended up watching KPop Demon Hunters together—second watch for me, first time for her. That was not at all planned, and in fact I had no plans to rewatch that movie in general. But somehow we got on the topic of kpop while we were eating cake together (she knows nothing about kpop, so I was telling her about what little I do know), which got me thinking about that movie (which she’d also never heard of), and then it occurred to me: my mom might actually really like it? more thoughts, including spoilers, beneath the cut )

► Unrelated to the above, but I posted that Lia/Emer ficlet I was talking about in my previous entry. It’s a small thing, but I mention it because—unless I missed something while scrolling through my works page—I believe it’s actually the first fic I’ve posted to AO3 outside of the context of a fandom event since like… summer of 2024 or so. Here’s hoping for more of that energy coming from me in the future, since that is literally one of my goals for this year <3

► Since talking in my previous post about my sudden desire to tackle my crunchyroll watchlist before my subscription runs out, I decided to make a spreadsheet for myself to motivate me and track my progress! Because that is the kind of person I am. self-indulgent spreadsheet-related rambling beneath the cut )

After that, I checked out The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies, and I’m about two episodes into it so far. And so far, I’m liking it! I do have some qualms—beneath the cut )

Today I took some pictures around the yard and did a couple of garden crafts. These are from the house yard and savanna. (See the Worm Bin and the Water Garden.)

My building at work is collapsing on one side not only are we working to fix that we hope to have money to renno some of the labs. It was a 2 hour meeting with the architect today and that was hopeful plus they teased the idea of other money for equipment and brought up the virtual cadaver table. I have the paperwork for those but they're 100K so let's fix the building first.

I thought my writer's zoom was today but no one was there. Wondering why. Sad I didn't get that. Did I just do it by myself? you know I didn't.

I forgot to share my books yesterday so here are Feb's reads
