FANFIC: ace in the hole (The Pitt)

This was a treat I wrote for Seasons of Drabbles! Season 2 really has me enamoured with this dynamic and I couldn't resist the prompt.

Title: ace in the hole.
Fandom: The Pitt.
Character/Pairing: Trinity Santos/Victoria Javadi.
Summary: Santos has a proposition. Javadi is itching for a fight.
Word count: 200.

"You and I should go to the Rivers Casino," Santos told her, blasé as ever. "Bet you're really good at counting cards."

"I am," she bragged. Snippy, she added, "But I'm not twenty-one yet, remember?"

"Right…" Santos drawled, in that supremely annoying way of hers, stretching the vocals beyond their limit. "Tell me, you ever played strip poker?"

Victoria was so fucking tired of Santos making fun of her youth and inexperience. It often made her mouth ran away from her, and this time was no different.

"No. But you'd have no chance against me."

Santos grinned, her eyebrows raised in reluctant appreciation.

"Alright, Crash. Friday night, after shift. You're on."

She walked away with a pep to her step. Victoria glared at her back until she turned a corner, out of view.

Whitaker, who silently listened to their back and forth wearing the face of a man who felt it'd be too awkward and rude to complain about his own excution, told her "Don't worry! I'll… make myself scarce that night."

That was kind of him, but unnecessary. She swore that in this particular battle of their cold war, it would not be Victoria who'd up naked and penniless.

New Year's Resolutions Check In

We made it to the end of February! \o/ If you have completed any of your short-term goals or subgoals, and/or you're still chugging away at your ongoing goals, then pat yourself on the back. You worked hard for that. About 95% of New Year's resolutions crash and burn before the end of January. If you're still going, you have beaten the odds!

I'm continuing to track goals at the end of each month. So far it seems to be helping, so that's encouraging. I'm looking at my goal list more often and trying to keep ticking off more of them.

These are the previous check in posts:

Five Years today

Five years ago today I fell. I nearly lost my leg. I was in the hospital/care home for months. It was horrible. Care homes are awful. It seemed like I'd be there forever. But there was still hope.

I taught my classes online from my bed. I helped interview for a new professor from that same bed.

And I had THIS community. You made that time better by checking in with me. You sent me gifts. You sent me stories. The Prodigal Son community made this most amazing art out of one of my stories and I took it back and forth to the hospital every time I had to return for more surgeries because I was afraid the care home would lose it and it was precious to me (It's in my office on top of the file cabinet today).

I'm not sure you know how much you meant to me as I learned to walk again. As I went through all this pain (If you want a visual, go look at the pictures Lindsey Vonn has been posting of her leg and external fixator, my leg looked exactly like that). And I feel sad that one of my biggest supporters, [personal profile] spikedluv isn't here to read this. But so many others did so much and more, especially [personal profile] evil_little_dog. It meant everything and I appreciate all of you. Thank you.

I'm doing good. I hike when I can. I'm not in terrible pain for the most part but the leg is weak and the nerve pain I do have is not fun. But I'm here. This is not stopping me.

And today I realized that not only is it a bad day for me two of my favorite celebrities died on the 27th, Leonard Nimoy and Mister Rogers.

In better news...

Tried the new coffee shop in Point Pleasant. this one isn't near the mothman centric stuff. There is one there that I go to that is...okay. I'd love to say let me watch your shop for a weekend and you go to a coffee conference because even McDonalds gets more adventuresome than you. This one had a great menu but too many cold drinks (especially for winter) I liked it but it's out of the way. A student found me there. figures.

AND the on-campus Mennonite coffee shop has mushroom coffee. I was afraid to know how much it was and they named the mixed drink with it the muddy puddle....

Came home to the news of someone I went to school with losing everything when some monster burned ALL of his beehives (he makes his living with the wax/honey etc), 60 hives, tens of thousands of bees, all gone. People suck.

Sigh.

But I did write and since I'm not ready for it to be on AO3 as it's part of a longer work, I'm just putting it here. Wrote it for [personal profile] spikesgirl58's 6 word challenge.

(no subject)

I've been struggling to be interested in things lately, but I'm going to try to get some thoughts out!

I'm so excited for 1348 Ex Voto. You play as a knight errant named Aeta and you're off to save your girlfriend. The gameplay looks pretty rough, I gotta admit, but I'm still cautiously excited. I encourage you to not read the comments on that youtube video unless you want to see the very worst of the gamer community complaining about it. :\ Anyways, this game comes out March 12th, which is a Thursday, the beginning of my weekend, so that's really nice. :3

Resident Evil: Requiem was released today and I'm excited to find an LPer who plays in a not annoying manner, haha, because I'm absolutely so hyped for this game, but I'm also a huge chicken who is not good at scary games. XD; Excited to see in a game again. :D

Pokemon Wind/Waves looks gorgeous! Since it's not even being released until 2027, I hope that means they're giving themselves time to really polish it up. And that gives me time to afford a Switch 2, haha. XD;

....had a sudden urge to try to app somewhere to rp. I haven't successfully rp'ed in ages lmao. I don't even know who I'd play as.

I'm working on identity porn for tomorrow because the Virginwan Weekend over on tumblr has it as a prompt, and y'all could've knocked me over with a feather when I saw it listed. A fest for deflowering my blorbo, and it has my word? OMG!

Even though what I meant back when I arguably made the word up (c. August, 2005 | Fanlore) and what the AO3 tag means do not tend to coincide.

My version is "A and B know each other extremely well. They have complicated identities -- maybe secret, but not secret from each other. They kink on acting out a subset of their identities for each other."

I am writing My Kind of Identity Porn on the occasion of Anakin's knighting.

It goes like this. )

Tagging this put Patricia O'Callaghan's cover of Leonard Cohen's "I'm Your Man" in my head, so here, have Charmax's awesome femslash vid to it.

Weekly Reading

Recently Finished
The Murder at World's End
The first book in a new historical murder mystery series. I liked this one a lot. A young male servant teams up with an eccentric upper class older woman to solve mysteries. Looking forward to the next one. I listened to this as an audio book and enjoyed the narrator a lot, too.

The Decagon House Murders
This is the first in the House Murders series, but the third I've read in novel form, as I had originally read this one as a manga. It's been a while since I've read the manga, though, so I thought I'd check out the novel as well. The manga seems to have stuck fairly close to the novel except for two big changes: the MC who doesn't go to the island with the others is a girl in the manga, but was male in the original, and the way the girl whose death triggers the revenge killings died is totally different in the manga. I can see why they'd change the gender of the one character, since it is otherwise all guys except two minor female characters who both die fairly early on, but I am baffled as to why they changed the death.

Boxers & Saints
Two volume graphic novel series about the Boxer Rebellion, a period in history about which I knew nothing at all previously (I had only vaguely heard the term and did not even realize it happened in China). Very interesting.

Yes, I'm Hot in This: The Hilarious Truth about Life in a Hijab
Collection of (I assume) web comics about life as a hijabi woman in the US. I enjoyed it, but collected all together the comics were often repetitive in a way that wouldn't feel as obvious if read spread out as a web comic.

Canadian Politics + The West Wing plotbunny, seeking good home, coauthor, or beta

REPORT: Mark Carney calls Canadian Men’s Hockey locker room to offer consolation RRSP advice from The Beaverton (US : The Onion :: Canada : The Beaverton) has left me wanting a conversation between the venerable-but-still-kicking former POTUS Jed Bartlet and Mark Carney, at any point in the last umpty years.

I can't write it by myself because a) I haven't watched TWW in over a decade and I was also stoned at the time, b) I have only a layperson's grasp of economics, and c) I watched and enjoyed Mark Carney's speech at Davos but that's all I know about him.

[profile] wernnaa suggested starting with a Planet Money episode to give them something to talk about, but I haven't been a regular listener in years.

Would anyone like to a) adopt, b) coauthor, or c) beta this bunny if I attempt to write it?

(Jed, in my reading, is not heterosexual because Leo McGarry is Leo McGarry, but I am not at all sure he'd hit on Carney or v.v.)

Friday open thread: activities in incongruous places

Tonight I'm going out to the next iteration of the silent disco (80s/90s/2000s music — the cheesiest you can imagine), which as always is taking place in the cathedral. There's always a weird moment of disorientation when you enter the cavernous space of this ancient medieval cathedral ... and it's full of dancing people of all ages, dressed in lurid fluoro colours, stage lighting, and DJs.

So my prompt for this week's open thread is:

What examples of activities taking place in wildly incongruous spaces have you encountered?

I guess I'm celebrating by creating even more character/ship tags haha. Hello hello, Eden cast! Welcome to AO3 ;)

Summary: Jin can sew himself back together, but he can't regrow a missing hand like some kind of lizard. Now, he has a choice: either get used to it, or go search for his missing limb. Easier said than done.

Ack! Ack! Ack!

It's been ten days since I updated here?!?! Aaaaaaack!

Er. Well. Nothing significant to report, really. Oh, aside from giving a signal boost to this post on [site community profile] dw_dev, about Dreamwidth's stance on "AI"/Machine Learning/what-have-you. There's even more detail in this thread on [site community profile] dw_dev on the post just before it, both of which really shed light on some of the actual good uses of Applied Statistics Machines.

Anyway, as a result of Dreamwidth's public stance that they won't accept any AI generated art for anything site supported (styles, mood themes, etc), I went ahead and made a statement of my own on [community profile] moodthemeinayear. Shortest version: AI generated mood themes will not be eligible for the Dreamwidth points giveaway.

Time for bed readiness now, I think!

That went better than expected

My building at work is collapsing on one side not only are we working to fix that we hope to have money to renno some of the labs. It was a 2 hour meeting with the architect today and that was hopeful plus they teased the idea of other money for equipment and brought up the virtual cadaver table. I have the paperwork for those but they're 100K so let's fix the building first.

I thought my writer's zoom was today but no one was there. Wondering why. Sad I didn't get that. Did I just do it by myself? you know I didn't.

Daily Happiness

1. I had another nice WFH day today. I had a web meeting at 4pm, and that would have been a web meeting even if I'd gone in, so no reason to go. Now that I'm not doing stuff that really heavily relies on accessing our system which can only be accessed from home by remoting into a PC at the store, it's nice to be able to work from home at least a couple days a week.

2. I went to the tattoo place today for my appointment but ended up not getting any work done today. She looked at my leg and said it's healing well, but the skin is still not fully back to normal, so we should wait to do the touch up. I told her I'd be in Japan for the first half of April, so we agreed to see how it's looking when I get back and do it then. The tattoo place is only about 15-20 minutes away (and today was good traffic both ways) so it was no bother going in, and I was glad to have her look at it. I told her I'm really happy with it, even how it is now. It really only has a few spots that need to be touched up. On the bottom front there's a bit where the marker she used to draw the lines still shows, and on the back there are a few bits where skin shows in between the color bands. But all of that is only noticeable when you look close, so I'm fine with waiting until after our trip.

3. We had two beat up cardboard cat scratcher/loungers that we replaced with the new wood/sisal ones, and one we just put in the recycling, but the other one we put out for Tuxie to see how he'd like it and he is a big fan. It can't be used for scratching anymore, but he loves it as a lounger and has been using it every day.

Media Roundup: Onward!

I’ve gotten back into the habit of going to the library once a week on the same day (Monday) to return stuff and pick up my holds. (This is also the best way I’ve found to get myself to return my books on time now that the library got rid of late fees) I keep thinking “this week the stack of new things will be smaller” but it never is. Surely I’ll run out of graphic novels I want to read that the library has at some point? But I’m glad it's not yet.

In other news I have now read more books this year than I did all of last year, which is pretty wild! Like sure they are all short things but I’m just reading so much more than I was few months ago and it’s really nice.

Red Threads by Ila Nguyen-Hayama—A graphic novel about a 15 year old girl in Tokyo who is invited to attend a magical school. This was very cute and charming if a little heavy on the info dumping about Japanese folklore. I really liked the main character's friendship with another girl at school.

Lumberjanes, Vol. 8-14 by N.D. Stevenson and Shannon Watters, et al.— I’d read up through Vol 10 years ago, but now I’m at stuff I haven’t read before. Still very fun!

Lumberjanes/Gotham Academy by Chynna Clugston Flores et al. —A crossover between two very fun comics both featuring teams of teens who deal with supernatural mysteries – I enjoyed it a lot! I wish there was more time for cross team interactions but it would be hard to fit in and keep focus on the story

Animated Batman—It’s nice to be into media that my kid also is interested in. She doesn’t watch anything with subtitles, but she likes Batman. So I’ve watched a handful of episodes of the 90’s animated Batman with her. (I started from where she’s gotten to before so not at the beginning) In terms of Bat-fam its not doing a lot, most of the kids/sidekicks aren’t in this and those that are aren’t around much (though I’m told they show up more frequently latter on) However the show itself is very well crafted! I’m impressed with both the animation (the style! The attention to detail) and the storytelling

Slay the Princess!

I've finished a play through of Slay the Princess. I really enjoyed it! I will now try to go after all the achievements héhéhé

I had to turn off the parallax and the ambient sound so I wouldn't get nauseous. Something to keep in mind if you're sensitive to motion sickness and/or vertigo.
