Thank you for your input

Thumbs Up to everyone who stopped by to let me know what you thought of my story (and if you want to read it, go back to yesterday). It's helpful. It helps the story form. It's a big week for me writing wise. I have two major open calls that open Saturday and I am set. I'm also trying to make a better record of all my unplaced stories along with word count/genre so I don't forget something.

It's also a very big week in terms of emotions. Friday is 5 years since I nearly lost my leg. That seems amazing.

Cancer is coming for another family member (which luckily is usually curable with surgery but still, fuck you cancer). Speaking of which I'm in the last days of my American Cancer Society read-a-thon charity drive. You can see more about it here.

As for Fannish 50 Tuesday it's THIS bullshit AGAIN. Creators being attacked, threatened, bullied. This past week, in a nutshell, Gooseworx, creator of The Amazing Digital Circus was in one of the livestream/video game plays this cast/creator loves to do and she mentions that Jax and Pomni are the main characters and people lost their fucking shit. They dragged her so hard over this, for daring to say who is the main character in this thing that they created but it didn't match their headcanons. She deleted the reddit account she used to interact with fans. A couple days later she apologized for not being professional in doing that.

I'm like maybe but I wouldn't say that. Why should you give fans access if they're going to be like this? And it's not just her. Vivzie who does Hazbin gets it like this all the time, Dana Terrace (the Owl House, Knights of Guinevere) does as well. Even Matt Braly (Amphibia) got slapped hard this past week. It culminated in Goose saying she doesn't want to touch her creation again once the last two episodes drop (something Dana Terrace did until this year, almost 4 years later with hers) and Glitch, the production company stepping in try to calm these people down.

If you're curious you can see Matt's thread here on twitter. What Glitch had to say is here.

and here are a few YT commentors who tend to have decent insights into things

and two from Ayy

Who would have thought I'd miss the toxicity of the Buffy days. At least it wasn't batshit crazy like this. And I truly miss the Prodigal Son fandom which was mostly (but of course not always) civil.

filling in the mcu's blanks (THEY SHOULDN'T BE BLANK IN THE FIRST PLACE)

actually wait. so in the mcu's civil war, when we're introduced to peter, he's like. much thinner than you would expect spider-man to be, and much thinner and less muscled than he is two months later during the events of spider-man: homecoming. obviously out-of-universe this is because tom holland hadn't properly bulked up for the role yet and did so in the year between civil war and homecoming but also in-universe. peter and may go from living in a much simpler apartment that you would sort of expect from the parker family to a slightly nicer apartment in homecoming, where peter has a bunk bed and a lot of toys compared to his sparse room with retro computers he fished out of the dumpster in civil war. again out-of-universe this is because jon watts is a shit fucking director who never should've been put in charge of peter parker movies as someone who prefers miles morales (BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT ENDED IN COPYING SHIT FROM MILES' STORIES AND PASTING THEM ONTO PETER. FUCK) BUT. when you combine those two facts. and remember that tony (asshole supreme in this situation) initially got his foot in the door to make may let him in their apartment by lying and saying that peter applied for the september foundation (which is a GRANT), which he then would've had to follow up on because otherwise may would've been like "??? okay where's the money from that grant you got accepted for" then you can honestly paint a picture of peter that is. much closer to his first comic?

i mean think about it. peter is a mutate who was mutated six months prior to civil war. he has enhanced EVERYTHING including his metabolism. he's visibly thinner compared to homecoming. may didn't know that he was spider-man so she probably would've assumed that he was just growing as every teenager does and needed to eat more, and to afford more food she would've had to work more hours at whatever job she had at the time. peter would notice this and because he is a person with a guilt complex the size of manhattan he would feel bad and try to eat less, or at least eat more at school by sneaking food or something so he ate less at home. what was his motivation for wanting to join the fantastic four in the very first issue of the amazing spider-man comic? MONEY! the second he found out the fantastic four didn't get paid he bailed on them. he needed money because ben had died and he and aunt may were financially struggling. and he literally cuts tony off in civil war to ask if there's money involved in the september foundation:

Peter Parker: Let me just stop you there.

Tony Stark: Yeah?

Peter Parker: Is this grant, like, got money involved or whatever? No?

Tony Stark: Yeah.

Peter Parker: Yeah?

Tony Stark: It's pretty well funded.

Peter Parker: Wow.

Tony Stark: Look who you're talking to.

so clearly they brought that motivation over from the comics. it's just that it would've made more sense if they also explicitly tied that into their financial situation + peter's desire to be an avenger (like he wanted to be a member of the FF) in homecoming. like yeah the reason that peter's suddenly super muscular and healthier-looking and the reason that may doesn't have to work as many long hours is because peter got that grant and forked over the majority of the money to may (and then used his own little portion of it to buy himself that bunk bed and the new desk and the toys and whatnot). which would also explain why may was seemingly unconcerned about the financial aspect of peter repeatedly losing his backpacks (with school supplies inside of them??) and obvious Their Entirely Different Apartment. like i'm just filling in the blanks for a bunch of shit that shouldn't need to be filled in because the mcu is a horrible franchise with horrible storytelling regarding one (1) peter parker but LIKE the in-universe enhanced metabolism guilt complex and going from thin to healthy (for an enhanced spider mutate) in a short period of time like that makes him infinitely more interesting to me ESPECIALLY since obviously he canonically insisted multiple times at first that he did not want to go to germany with tony!! but then when he was actually IN germany and fighting he started yapping about how he had to "impress mr. stark". in that instance of COURSE he wanted to become an avenger if he gets a fat paycheck for checks notes being blackmailed and kidnapped into fighting in an international conflict for unknown reasons (to him). like all he had to do was be exploited as a child soldier and let captain america knock him around a little bit and suddenly he actually doesn't have to starve himself anymore and his aunt isn't as tired all the time because she doesn't have to work as many hours because of Him, Specifically??? SIGN HIM THE FUCK UP!!!!

Daily Happiness

1. We had burritos for dinner, along with a pineapple tamale we had gotten from the farmers market on Saturday but hadn't eaten yet, and the tamale was so good! It didn't have chunks of pineapple in it, but rather was solid masa that was flavored with pineapple. Definitely would get that again. (The burritos were very good, too, but I got the one I always get from there, so I already knew I would like it.)

2. They've released the menu for the Food and Wine Festival at DCA, which is starting next Friday. There's a lot of tasty looking stuff and we'll miss out on about two weeks of it because we'll be in Japan, so I'm glad we'll have plenty of opportunities to go in March and then once we're back from Japan can pick up any must-tries that we didn't get to yet.

3. Last nigh Chloe was all snuggled up on my bed when I wanted to go to sleep, and sadly not in any way that I could get in bed with her, so I just scooped her up, blankie and all, and set her down on my desk chair. She protested when I moved her, but seemed satisfied with the results. She stayed snuggled up on the chair for a couple hours anyway!

Habit Tracking: Week 08 (February 15 - February 21)

Happy year of the horse! Lunar new year was on Tuesday the 17th. This sticker is a Prezwalski horse by artist Featherbone.

This week was kind of a drag. The week started with the extremely sad news about my friend spikedluv passing away. While she'd passed away a couple weeks ago, I didn't learn about it until Sunday, and I very much miss her presence. I'm still sick, and at this point I'm just tired of it dragging on! I'm coughing a lot, and I'm tired, and I'm going through kleenex way faster than I'd like. Otherwise I feel mostly okay, but I'm just so tired of it, ha. Alex and I did have a lovely day on Monday, visiting the botanic gardens, but everything else was pretty blah. I did push through to get a lot done on Saturday, which sort of felt like it redeemed the do-nothing of the rest of the week, but I still did very little writing and am frustrated by how slow reading has been.

Goals for the week:

  • I did not finish reading Hell Bent, though I did read some almost every night
  • I did work on reviews
  • We did pet-sit for mom and Taylor
  • We went to the botanic gardens as a bit of a belated Valentine's day
  • I did not make my phone calls
  • I did not work on my reading page
  • I did not work on my WIP outline
  • I did water my plants. My poor plants.

Tracked habits:

  • Work - 5/7
  • Household Maintenance - 5/7
  • Physical Activity - 3/7
  • Wrote 500/1000+ Words - 0/7
  • Non-fiction Writing - 1/7 - over 1000 words
  • Meta Work - 2/7
  • Personal Writing - 4/7
  • Other Creative Things - 1/7
  • Reading - 7/7 - mostly I read Hell Bent, though I read a bit of my ebook; Alex and I read some of The Luminous Dead
  • Attention to Media - 7/7 - Sunday we watched the Olympics, and I fell asleep watching youtube; Monday we also watched some youtube; Tuesday we watched some Olympic figure skating, some news coverage, and later a review; Wednesday we watched some news and storm chasing, and then some game playthroughs; Thursday we watched more Olympic figure skating and ski mountaineering (which seems horrible, lol); Friday watched a gaming livestream and some Olympics; Saturday had some Olympics in the background.
  • Video Games - 0/7
  • Social Interaction - 3/7

Interesting places

Looking at my podcasts the other day, glaring at the ones I want to update for not updating enough, I did a thing that I know I've done before and I'm sure I will again: I thought gosh I really like that Gareth Dennis, why am I so behind on his??

Then I listen to some and (when it's not about train crashes) pretty soon I'm like I should be taking notes on this, this is about WORK. Free bus passes, driverless public transport, that's stuff I get paid to think about so I don't wanna do it in my spare time so much.

So the podcast episode goes half-unlistened to. Again.

I was already thinking that before the most recent episode, about the Gorton & Denton by-election. I listen to podcasts for escapism, that's why I like baseball! This is no kind of escape.

But today, maybe because of my time off (both a break from thinking about transport policy, and more time to listen to podcasts so I'm burning through them quicker) or maybe because the podcasts I like really aren't updating enough no matter how much I glare at the app, I put this one on.

It was at first pretty novel to hear a voice I associate with engineering disasters etc. talking about roads I've been on and places I know well.

I do think it's interesting how much transport has been emblematic of this election: when I first saw the locally-infamous "Patricia Clegg" letter that Reform is trying to deceive people with, the thing that stuck out to me most was "the buses aren't working," and I just scoffed at this slight on my beloved Bee Network -- not like I'm anything to do with TfGM or Labour or anything, but I'm really impressed at what Andy Burnham has been able to do and it really is nonsense to say that buses don't work when we have, for the first time, real-time information available in the app and AV announcements on increasingly many buses. This more than anything, more than even a candidate from Hitchin, made me feel like that letter was not written by any "concerned neighbour" but by someone who hasn't been to Manchester, not recently.

We got a postcard today "from" Andy Burnham himself telling us "the community has to unite around our candidate or you'll get a Reform MP" (typical Labour, telling us we have to do what they tell us to) and on this postcard, as well as the expected photo of him with the candidate is just a particular photo of yellow Bee Network buses that I've seen in every TfGM press release and news story about them. It really is a symbol of his; bringing about the first franchise outside of London, and the coming integration with local train services, really does feel miraculous.

So yeah, it really is interesting how much transport has been a useful lens to view the by-election with.

But man. Between this by-election and Minnesota, I'm like... never mind living in interesting times, I'm weary of living in interesting places.
