tropicsbear: Saitoh Kazuo from Bus Gamer saluting (Bus Gamer: Saitoh Kazuo)

šŸ“½ļø The Old Guard 2 felt more like a generic action movie than its predecessor. Don't get me wrong! I love my action movies, generic or not. And the aforementioned action was certainly slicker and more visually appealing than the first movie. But there were too many moments where the plot points or dialogue choices took me out of the moment. This was in a weird spot between, "Not dumb enough for me to enjoy this mindlessly," and "What the hell are they doing?" All that said, I'd still watch a third installment to see Uma Thurman and Charlize Theron fighting to the death šŸ˜†

šŸ“š Something about Makoto (the top/alpha) from Omega no Mukotori lit up all my neurons in the best way šŸ‘€ I guess I just have a soft spot for dark-haired burly dudes. I also very much enjoyed the fact that Yoshiharu (the bottom/omega) was the much more aggressive character and did most of the pursuing. I will gladly consume A/B/O content, even the non-traditional stuff.

It seems that dropping off of Dreamwidth is unavoidable when I take a long-ish vacation somewhere because of the disruption to my routine. Yet another reason why I'm not fond of out-of-town trips.

I want to write about what I've been up to lately—because I want to be able to go through my entries in the future and not think, "What was I doing back in 20xx?"—but I also have a list of random things I want to post about while I work on that.

First up, "Llorando se fue" by Los Kjarkas:

When I was younger, it seemed like all the trucks and jeepneys played the same exact snippet of music whenever they were backing up instead of a generic beeping sound. As I got older I realized that it sounded like it came from J. Lo's "On the Floor", which I personally think is highly improbable. I guess you could argue that there are truck and/or jeepney drivers into J. Lo's music but?? I had my doubts.

This year I finally decided to do some internet sleuthing and found out that "On the Floor" sampled "Llorando se fue" and that's where the snippet came from! You can listen to the sampled part here, at around the 12-second mark.

(I don't know why I have an easier time accepting that Filipino truck/jeepney drivers like Bolivian folk music vs. them liking J. Lo's music šŸ˜‚ I don't have anything against J. Lo.)

Listening to the song on YouTube made me feel oddly nostalgic; I can't remember the last time I heard a truck/jeepney using the song as their replacement backing up sound.

It was hot today, so we decided to go down for dinner instead of earlier in the day and that was the right choice. By the time we got down there around five, it was really quite pleasant and it wasn't long until the sun started going down.

1. We walked up to the bagel place this morning for breakfast and, in addition to my bagel, I got their passionfruit matcha latte again. It's really good!

2. I got a new corner shelving unit for the garage and put it together today. I meant for it to go in the corner between two of Carla's CD shelves, since something needs to go in that space, but it turned out to be too large. The shelves can be moved out a little from where they are now to allow something larger between them, but if they're moved enough to make space for this, it'll block an outlet on one side and either go further behind the couch on the other side than I'd prefer or we'd have to move the couch further down (which could be done but idk I like it where it is). But there is another corner that also needs something and it looks perfect there. That's the corner where we had the Christmas tree, but there's still plenty of room to put the tree there again even with the shelf in place.

3. It was very warm today so we decided to go to Disneyland for dinner rather than breakfast or lunch, and it was the right choice. It was actually very pleasant in the evening.

4. Yet another cat enjoying the new lounger.

I think I may have walked five miles today in while playing PokƩmon Go, and my legs are not going to be happy about it tomorrow.

I am trying desperately not to care about the shameless money-grab that is special backgrounds, but alas, it's not working very well.

Anyway, Happy PokƩmon Day/Weekend/What-have-you, the trailer for PokƩmon Winds and Waves also got to me more than I wanted it to, Nintendo clearly has my number on speed-dial.

I've been struggling to be interested in things lately, but I'm going to try to get some thoughts out!

I'm so excited for 1348 Ex Voto. You play as a knight errant named Aeta and you're off to save your girlfriend. The gameplay looks pretty rough, I gotta admit, but I'm still cautiously excited. I encourage you to not read the comments on that youtube video unless you want to see the very worst of the gamer community complaining about it. :\ Anyways, this game comes out March 12th, which is a Thursday, the beginning of my weekend, so that's really nice. :3

Resident Evil: Requiem was released today and I'm excited to find an LPer who plays in a not annoying manner, haha, because I'm absolutely so hyped for this game, but I'm also a huge chicken who is not good at scary games. XD; Excited to see in a game again. :D

Pokemon Wind/Waves looks gorgeous! Since it's not even being released until 2027, I hope that means they're giving themselves time to really polish it up. And that gives me time to afford a Switch 2, haha. XD;

....had a sudden urge to try to app somewhere to rp. I haven't successfully rp'ed in ages lmao. I don't even know who I'd play as.

The Murder at World's End
The first book in a new historical murder mystery series. I liked this one a lot. A young male servant teams up with an eccentric upper class older woman to solve mysteries. Looking forward to the next one. I listened to this as an audio book and enjoyed the narrator a lot, too.

The Decagon House Murders
This is the first in the House Murders series, but the third I've read in novel form, as I had originally read this one as a manga. It's been a while since I've read the manga, though, so I thought I'd check out the novel as well. The manga seems to have stuck fairly close to the novel except for two big changes: the MC who doesn't go to the island with the others is a girl in the manga, but was male in the original, and the way the girl whose death triggers the revenge killings died is totally different in the manga. I can see why they'd change the gender of the one character, since it is otherwise all guys except two minor female characters who both die fairly early on, but I am baffled as to why they changed the death.

Boxers & Saints
Two volume graphic novel series about the Boxer Rebellion, a period in history about which I knew nothing at all previously (I had only vaguely heard the term and did not even realize it happened in China). Very interesting.

Yes, I'm Hot in This: The Hilarious Truth about Life in a Hijab
Collection of (I assume) web comics about life as a hijabi woman in the US. I enjoyed it, but collected all together the comics were often repetitive in a way that wouldn't feel as obvious if read spread out as a web comic.

I've been watching Pearl's Hermitcraft season 10 and it's super fun! She is definitely one of my favorite hermits to watch, honestly, I love how she builds, it's very inspiring. I'm going through HC10 by creator-- I started with Pearl, and then I'm going to watch Gem, Scar, Cleo, Tango, and Bdubs. I might go backwards, though, for some of them, because that's a lot of hermits! I think I want to watch 100% of Gem and Bdubs, but I might cheat and skip around a bit for the others, since my favorite phase of Hermitcraft is mid to late Hermitcraft when everyone's doing their big awesome builds and there's always something nice to look at.

But I love Pearl's solarpunk theme! I'm vaguely planning my own next base for the next season of the Patreon server that I'm on, and I have a lot of ideas. I want to make a farmhouse like Pearl did for s10, but I also want to make a mineshaft base like Xisuma has in season 11, but I also want to make a pirate kingdom tropical island build. Oh, and I think building a magical ivory wizard tower would be super cool, too. Since I want to start putting videos on YouTube, I wonder if maybe I should try and build those in creative mode and make little videos for it. I don't want to focus too much on Minecraft videos for YouTube because there's already just so much content out there and I'd rather start in a smaller pond, but that's no reason not to do a little Minecraft that sounds fun to me.

Speaking of streaming and recording, though, I have everything set up to do it! I just need to actually do it... I'm a little nervous, so I want to start just by recording game videos, but I think I need to find something that I really really want to play, so I'll actually do it. I had wanted to start off with Hollow Knight or Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom, but I think I'll have to rethink that. My dilemma is that I want to play a game that I like, and I can't know if I like it until I play it, but replaying a game does not have me nearly as excited to do as playing for the first time. I think the solution is to buy a new game that I really want to play, but it's got to be just the right type of game... maybe Shovel Knight?

Normally lately I've been trying to avoid making frivolous purchases, though, to get my cashflow reined in, but I did my taxes this week and I'm getting a huge refund because tips are now deductible from taxes. So according to my tax return, I've only made like $11k in taxable income, but I've been paying taxes this whole year as though all of my income was taxable. I'm very glad to have the money, even though I would rather pay full taxes to a blue administration. But if we have to have Trump, then at least my tax money is back in my own hands, I guess. Idk, I feel a little conflicted, though of course it's not going to change how I vote.

But that leaves me with a lot of money I wasn't expecting... most of it is going to go into my savings account, since I've been low on savings lately and want to beef it up. But I also really want to buy something fun for myself since I can afford it now! I was thinking maybe a Nintendo Switch 2, but seriously looking at it, I'm just not sure that I'm actually going to use it to play switch 2 games yet. I don't need a new Mario Kart, and even with Pokemon Pokopia, it looks like the newest Animal Crossing update that I haven't played yet will scratch a very similar itch. I definitely want to play the newly announced gen 10 Pokemon game, but that won't be until 2027. The games that I definitely want to get a switch 2 for don't even have release dates yet-- Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, and Danganronpa 2x2, but it's very likely that Danganronpa 2x2 will also release on the PC, and I've been waiting to play Elden Ring for so long that it won't be a big deal to wait longer. So I'm very hmmm. I think I'm going to sit on the money for a little bit, and hope that a Genealogy of the Holy War remake gets announced for Switch 2, because that will definitely get me to buy a NS2, lol.

Oh, and I've decided (again) that I want to go back to college, but this time I'm going to do online college with condensed terms, to alleviate the boredom I've struggled with in longer terms, and because my main goal is to just get it over with and get a degree. I'm currently aiming for a BA in Information Technology. With my work schedule only being four days a week, I think it's very doable to do an online class, even a highly condensed one, while working. I just need to have some more discipline about my weekends, which is already something I want, but also something that I struggle with. Maybe I ought to plan on going to the library to study, instead of trying to get myself to do it while I'm home.

Anyways that's mostly been what's going on with me lately! I'm still watching Naruto, too, and I intend to keep playing Silksong, but it's been on the back burner for a while now. Work has been more stressful, I suspect because the ongoing union bargaining negotiations mean that upper management is trying to fire as many people as possible before we get our raises (with possible backpay), but it's mostly manageable.

Tonight I'm going out to the next iteration of the silent disco (80s/90s/2000s music — the cheesiest you can imagine), which as always is taking place in the cathedral. There's always a weird moment of disorientation when you enter the cavernous space of this ancient medieval cathedral ... and it's full of dancing people of all ages, dressed in lurid fluoro colours, stage lighting, and DJs.

So my prompt for this week's open thread is:

What examples of activities taking place in wildly incongruous spaces have you encountered?

It's been ten days since I updated here?!?! Aaaaaaack!

Er. Well. Nothing significant to report, really. Oh, aside from giving a signal boost to this post on [site community profile] dw_dev, about Dreamwidth's stance on "AI"/Machine Learning/what-have-you. There's even more detail in this thread on [site community profile] dw_dev on the post just before it, both of which really shed light on some of the actual good uses of Applied Statistics Machines.

Anyway, as a result of Dreamwidth's public stance that they won't accept any AI generated art for anything site supported (styles, mood themes, etc), I went ahead and made a statement of my own on [community profile] moodthemeinayear. Shortest version: AI generated mood themes will not be eligible for the Dreamwidth points giveaway.

Time for bed readiness now, I think!

1. I had another nice WFH day today. I had a web meeting at 4pm, and that would have been a web meeting even if I'd gone in, so no reason to go. Now that I'm not doing stuff that really heavily relies on accessing our system which can only be accessed from home by remoting into a PC at the store, it's nice to be able to work from home at least a couple days a week.

2. I went to the tattoo place today for my appointment but ended up not getting any work done today. She looked at my leg and said it's healing well, but the skin is still not fully back to normal, so we should wait to do the touch up. I told her I'd be in Japan for the first half of April, so we agreed to see how it's looking when I get back and do it then. The tattoo place is only about 15-20 minutes away (and today was good traffic both ways) so it was no bother going in, and I was glad to have her look at it. I told her I'm really happy with it, even how it is now. It really only has a few spots that need to be touched up. On the bottom front there's a bit where the marker she used to draw the lines still shows, and on the back there are a few bits where skin shows in between the color bands. But all of that is only noticeable when you look close, so I'm fine with waiting until after our trip.

3. We had two beat up cardboard cat scratcher/loungers that we replaced with the new wood/sisal ones, and one we just put in the recycling, but the other one we put out for Tuxie to see how he'd like it and he is a big fan. It can't be used for scratching anymore, but he loves it as a lounger and has been using it every day.

Media Roundup: Onward!

I’ve gotten back into the habit of going to the library once a week on the same day (Monday) to return stuff and pick up my holds. (This is also the best way I’ve found to get myself to return my books on time now that the library got rid of late fees) I keep thinking ā€œthis week the stack of new things will be smallerā€ but it never is. Surely I’ll run out of graphic novels I want to read that the library has at some point? But I’m glad it's not yet.

In other news I have now read more books this year than I did all of last year, which is pretty wild! Like sure they are all short things but I’m just reading so much more than I was few months ago and it’s really nice.

Red Threads by Ila Nguyen-Hayama—A graphic novel about a 15 year old girl in Tokyo who is invited to attend a magical school. This was very cute and charming if a little heavy on the info dumping about Japanese folklore. I really liked the main character's friendship with another girl at school.

Lumberjanes, Vol. 8-14 by N.D. Stevenson and Shannon Watters, et al.— I’d read up through Vol 10 years ago, but now I’m at stuff I haven’t read before. Still very fun!

Lumberjanes/Gotham Academy by Chynna Clugston Flores et al. —A crossover between two very fun comics both featuring teams of teens who deal with supernatural mysteries – I enjoyed it a lot! I wish there was more time for cross team interactions but it would be hard to fit in and keep focus on the story

Animated Batman—It’s nice to be into media that my kid also is interested in. She doesn’t watch anything with subtitles, but she likes Batman. So I’ve watched a handful of episodes of the 90’s animated Batman with her. (I started from where she’s gotten to before so not at the beginning) In terms of Bat-fam its not doing a lot, most of the kids/sidekicks aren’t in this and those that are aren’t around much (though I’m told they show up more frequently latter on) However the show itself is very well crafted! I’m impressed with both the animation (the style! The attention to detail) and the storytelling

1. I had a nice WFH day today. One meeting scheduled for late morning, but it was a web meeting anyway, so why go in to the office just for that? Tomorrow I'll be working from home, too, because I have my tattoo touch-up appointment mid-morning and while I'm sure the bandage situation won't be as dire as the first go-round, I still don't want to have to worry about suddenly needing to change it while I'm at work.

2. The other day Carla took a walk down a street we don't usually go down and discovered a litte cafe we'd never known existed, so today we walked over there for lunch and shared a delicious prosciutto and pear sandwich. It was so good! It also had caramelized onions on it, which didn't sit well for me, unsurprisingly, but I would do it again. They also have various drinks, including a date-based smoothie called a majoon, so I got one of those and it was also super delicious.

3. Molly has also been enjoying the new lounger.
