That wasn't so bad after all

A year ago I was reflecting on angry people being angry, thinking about how to track my time, and watching Unforgotten.

Today I started with a Bookfox video about themes, and a Girl Gone London one about things that surprised her in the UK - one being how to eat cake :D They both gave me something to think about.

When I got settled into work, I wrote up the process from yesterday and checked through the docs from a couple of projects that are going to be audited. The House of PMO meeting from this morning was cancelled, so that gave me some breathing space. After a quick dinner, it was time for the wrap-up session for Module 1 of the AI programme. We're really flying through it! Now I just need to sort out the project...

This afternoon I watched a webinar about PMO's managing risk. And a suggestion for ANOTHER name for this type of organisation - the Value Management Office. Which makes sense - why do projects that don't produce value?

The Friday Feature returned today! 7 games with unforgettable intros - FFVII made it but FFVIII didn't. I suppose 7 gets the player right into the action...

After tea (jacket spuds!), I made some progress with TTPII. The third side of the Megastructure is open and I've unbound the entity inside. And we've seen the truth... And it's all a bit sad, really ;(

Now I'm watching the end of The Alien Invasion. Tom Baker's Doctor will always be the best <3

(no subject)

I've been watching Pearl's Hermitcraft season 10 and it's super fun! She is definitely one of my favorite hermits to watch, honestly, I love how she builds, it's very inspiring. I'm going through HC10 by creator-- I started with Pearl, and then I'm going to watch Gem, Scar, Cleo, Tango, and Bdubs. I might go backwards, though, for some of them, because that's a lot of hermits! I think I want to watch 100% of Gem and Bdubs, but I might cheat and skip around a bit for the others, since my favorite phase of Hermitcraft is mid to late Hermitcraft when everyone's doing their big awesome builds and there's always something nice to look at.

But I love Pearl's solarpunk theme! I'm vaguely planning my own next base for the next season of the Patreon server that I'm on, and I have a lot of ideas. I want to make a farmhouse like Pearl did for s10, but I also want to make a mineshaft base like Xisuma has in season 11, but I also want to make a pirate kingdom tropical island build. Oh, and I think building a magical ivory wizard tower would be super cool, too. Since I want to start putting videos on YouTube, I wonder if maybe I should try and build those in creative mode and make little videos for it. I don't want to focus too much on Minecraft videos for YouTube because there's already just so much content out there and I'd rather start in a smaller pond, but that's no reason not to do a little Minecraft that sounds fun to me.

Speaking of streaming and recording, though, I have everything set up to do it! I just need to actually do it... I'm a little nervous, so I want to start just by recording game videos, but I think I need to find something that I really really want to play, so I'll actually do it. I had wanted to start off with Hollow Knight or Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom, but I think I'll have to rethink that. My dilemma is that I want to play a game that I like, and I can't know if I like it until I play it, but replaying a game does not have me nearly as excited to do as playing for the first time. I think the solution is to buy a new game that I really want to play, but it's got to be just the right type of game... maybe Shovel Knight?

Normally lately I've been trying to avoid making frivolous purchases, though, to get my cashflow reined in, but I did my taxes this week and I'm getting a huge refund because tips are now deductible from taxes. So according to my tax return, I've only made like $11k in taxable income, but I've been paying taxes this whole year as though all of my income was taxable. I'm very glad to have the money, even though I would rather pay full taxes to a blue administration. But if we have to have Trump, then at least my tax money is back in my own hands, I guess. Idk, I feel a little conflicted, though of course it's not going to change how I vote.

But that leaves me with a lot of money I wasn't expecting... most of it is going to go into my savings account, since I've been low on savings lately and want to beef it up. But I also really want to buy something fun for myself since I can afford it now! I was thinking maybe a Nintendo Switch 2, but seriously looking at it, I'm just not sure that I'm actually going to use it to play switch 2 games yet. I don't need a new Mario Kart, and even with Pokemon Pokopia, it looks like the newest Animal Crossing update that I haven't played yet will scratch a very similar itch. I definitely want to play the newly announced gen 10 Pokemon game, but that won't be until 2027. The games that I definitely want to get a switch 2 for don't even have release dates yet-- Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, and Danganronpa 2x2, but it's very likely that Danganronpa 2x2 will also release on the PC, and I've been waiting to play Elden Ring for so long that it won't be a big deal to wait longer. So I'm very hmmm. I think I'm going to sit on the money for a little bit, and hope that a Genealogy of the Holy War remake gets announced for Switch 2, because that will definitely get me to buy a NS2, lol.

Oh, and I've decided (again) that I want to go back to college, but this time I'm going to do online college with condensed terms, to alleviate the boredom I've struggled with in longer terms, and because my main goal is to just get it over with and get a degree. I'm currently aiming for a BA in Information Technology. With my work schedule only being four days a week, I think it's very doable to do an online class, even a highly condensed one, while working. I just need to have some more discipline about my weekends, which is already something I want, but also something that I struggle with. Maybe I ought to plan on going to the library to study, instead of trying to get myself to do it while I'm home.

Anyways that's mostly been what's going on with me lately! I'm still watching Naruto, too, and I intend to keep playing Silksong, but it's been on the back burner for a while now. Work has been more stressful, I suspect because the ongoing union bargaining negotiations mean that upper management is trying to fire as many people as possible before we get our raises (with possible backpay), but it's mostly manageable.

Canadian Politics + The West Wing plotbunny, seeking good home, coauthor, or beta

REPORT: Mark Carney calls Canadian Men’s Hockey locker room to offer consolation RRSP advice from The Beaverton (US : The Onion :: Canada : The Beaverton) has left me wanting a conversation between the venerable-but-still-kicking former POTUS Jed Bartlet and Mark Carney, at any point in the last umpty years.

I can't write it by myself because a) I haven't watched TWW in over a decade and I was also stoned at the time, b) I have only a layperson's grasp of economics, and c) I watched and enjoyed Mark Carney's speech at Davos but that's all I know about him.

[profile] wernnaa suggested starting with a Planet Money episode to give them something to talk about, but I haven't been a regular listener in years.

Would anyone like to a) adopt, b) coauthor, or c) beta this bunny if I attempt to write it?

(Jed, in my reading, is not heterosexual because Leo McGarry is Leo McGarry, but I am not at all sure he'd hit on Carney or v.v.)

Anime Check-in: "Bikkurimen" ep. 4-5

Episode 4: Jack's song lyrics were so bad at first but then it got good. :'D

Honestly the transformations look terrible.

Lmao Bikkurimen = Be cool men 🤣🤣🤣

I like the story it tried to tell about finding common ground and that things that are new to you can be scary but that doesn't mean they're bad.

Ushikawa previously said he doesn't do anything special when opening the wafer but he lieeed hahah.

Jack and Ushikawa watching Yamato just happy to get a seal, doesn't have to be glittery. :') He's starting his own collection!

Episode 5: Another Wakajinshi has appeared, Ippon Tsuritei. Pink lady has a crush on him but she's married.

OMG the little turtle Yamato picked up is actually a Wakajinshi!! He was stuck in that form due to a seal. He's Kijin Ali Baba. He was originally a Wakajinshi but got taken and turned. Now as a child he was homeless and Maris took him in and asked him to be a spy and said he'd always be a devil to be used. So cruel. :/ And heavy, he tried to commit suicide!!

Also, whose gravestone was Tsuri visiting and why was Maris watching? Maybe Ali Baba can stay with Tsuri? Or Yamato's mom is okay with him staying there when she finds out.

*keysmash* The ending animation is so cute!!

Work is At It Again!

Because of course they are. Due to Brilliant Financial Decisions that I can't get into without doxxing myself, work are making some changes. Some of them I can understand; they're standardising opening hours and want shift patterns to line up with each other, cool, that makes sense. Some of them though... Yeesh. Their ideal situation that they're working towards includes but is not limited to:

  1. No full-time contracts, and a hard limit of 25 hours a week max. (Lunch breaks are inconvenient, and if we only work a five hour shift we don't get a break.) Also, no one will need to work extra hours because we'll be fully staffed – ignore every other time we've said that, this time we mean it!

  2. No home libraries; everyone is part of a pool and assigned two or three libraries per week to work at.

  3. No overlap between shifts, so no proper handover between shifts (because why would we need that?).

  4. "We heard your complaints that there's no job mobility that isn't becoming a manager, so we created more manager positions! ♥"

  5. Two fewer libraries in the network – one of them is closing entirely, and one is full of valuable and delicate material so we're going to leave it open and completely unstaffed.

And when people raised questions and objections, they were told "Well, you can always leave."

... Aight, bet.

Now I'm waiting to hear back from one library job, and I've got three other applications to get in by close of play on Monday. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

For bonus points: we were all assigned a mandatory meeting with one of our great-grandbosses to discuss the changes and ask any questions. Me being me, I sent him an email before the meeting with all of my questions so that we had an agenda and he could prepare answers! (ʘ‿ʘ🌺) He told me a lot of things, most of which did not answer my questions, and I sent him a summary of his answers and the questions I would still like answered. (ʘ‿ʘ🌺) I think each email was two pages each, front and back, and I need you all to understand the peak comedy of his reply: "Had a quick read, that looks right, hope it helped you."

I do literally hours of writing relevant and appropriate questions, checking my recording, summarising your useless responses, checking FAQs, and your response is "Hope it helped you."

(ʘ‿ʘ)ノ🌺

Met with my line manager on Thursday and accidentally cried at her, because I sent her copies of my messages and her response was "I can tell you really care about this job and your colleagues." Turns out I wanted someone to acknowledge that? I'm not being awkward for the sake of it, I'm being awkward because I want to keep doing my job! She also suggested that I send my questions to Other Great-Grandboss to get actual answers, but only after I revise out some of my... Expressions of frustration... Because Other Great-Grandboss will actually read them, and it won't help me get my answers. But god, I just – I'm irrationally convinced that somehow I can find the magic words to convince the bosses to fucking listen to us and understand why people are upset. I can't, but what if I could.

... Anyway, that's what's going on with me right now. I'm going to cross stitch Pokémon and watch other people play the new Resident Evil game because hahahahaha NO I AM NOT PLAYING THE GAME WHERE SOMEONE STALKS ME IN THE DARK. NO THANK YOU.

Snowdrop Day

I went to the cemetery today and it was the first warm day of spring - even the wind was warm, and all the birds were going absolutely nuts, they were so loud. The snowdrops are in full bloom everywhere and they look so incredibly lovely against the leaf litter.

Friday open thread: activities in incongruous places

Tonight I'm going out to the next iteration of the silent disco (80s/90s/2000s music — the cheesiest you can imagine), which as always is taking place in the cathedral. There's always a weird moment of disorientation when you enter the cavernous space of this ancient medieval cathedral ... and it's full of dancing people of all ages, dressed in lurid fluoro colours, stage lighting, and DJs.

So my prompt for this week's open thread is:

What examples of activities taking place in wildly incongruous spaces have you encountered?

New K-9 fic: To win your hand (Ren/Oboro/Fujimaru/Kagari + one-sided Sasakura/Fujimaru)

First K-9 fic I posted since the tags got wrangled :D Ooooh the delicious luxury of having the ship name auto-complete... 🫦 especially when it's long af XD

I guess I'm celebrating by creating even more character/ship tags haha. Hello hello, Eden cast! Welcome to AO3 ;)

To win your hand | K-9 | Ren/Oboro/Fujimaru/Kagari + one-sided Sasakura/Fujimaru | 2.2k words | rated T

Summary: Jin can sew himself back together, but he can't regrow a missing hand like some kind of lizard. Now, he has a choice: either get used to it, or go search for his missing limb. Easier said than done.

Read it on Dreamwidth or on AO3.

Ack! Ack! Ack!

It's been ten days since I updated here?!?! Aaaaaaack!

Er. Well. Nothing significant to report, really. Oh, aside from giving a signal boost to this post on [site community profile] dw_dev, about Dreamwidth's stance on "AI"/Machine Learning/what-have-you. There's even more detail in this thread on [site community profile] dw_dev on the post just before it, both of which really shed light on some of the actual good uses of Applied Statistics Machines.

Anyway, as a result of Dreamwidth's public stance that they won't accept any AI generated art for anything site supported (styles, mood themes, etc), I went ahead and made a statement of my own on [community profile] moodthemeinayear. Shortest version: AI generated mood themes will not be eligible for the Dreamwidth points giveaway.

Time for bed readiness now, I think!
